Makar Sankranti is one of the few Indian festivals that follows solar calendar and it falls on 14th of January.<br />2 .The sun enters Makara Rashi (sun sign Capricorn) on this particular day and hence is named as Makar Sankranti.<br />3. The day and night both are equally long and post Makar Sankranti, the days become longer and the nights shorter.<br />4.There is a very interesting practice of flying colorful kites, that is followed for ages on Makar Sankranti.<br />5.On this day, the holy river Ganga is said to have descended to Earth by flowing from Lord Shiva’s matted hair.<br />6. It is also associated with Hindu Sun God and his son Shani Dev and believed to forget their hatred for each other.<br />7.This day actually marks the beginning of spring and is generally celebrated as a harvest festival throughout India.<br />8. Many westerners consider Makar Sankranti to be Indian Thanksgiving festival.<br />9. This one festival is known by many names in different regions, like Pongal, Lohri, Uttarayan, Maghi and Khichdi. <br />10.
